In 2026, I finally tackled the classic 10-day road trip from Albany to Saugerties, and wow, who knew frozen lakes could be so charming? Who needs feeling in their fingers when you have views like this?

My plan was simple: drive, eat, stare at mountains, repeat. The route starts in Albany, the state capital and New York's oldest town, which is older than America by hundreds of years. I had less than a day, so I sprinted through the New York State Museum and pretended I understood art. Did I retain anything? Absolutely not. Did I enjoy it? Obviously.

🚗 Albany to Ticonderoga: Lake George and Frozen Motorcycles

The 98.5-mile drive to Ticonderoga took about 2 hours non-stop, but I stopped constantly. Saratoga Lake and Lake George kept photobombing my windshield. Lake George, in the protected Adirondack region, is one of Upstate New York's top vacation destinations. If you visit in February, the Lake George Winter Carnival runs each weekend while the lake is most likely frozen. Motorcycles race on the frozen lake. Motorcycles! On ice! What could possibly go wrong?

❄️ Ticonderoga to Plattsburgh: Ausable Chasm and Lake Champlain

The 68-mile drive to Plattsburgh hugs Lake Champlain for almost its entire length. This freshwater lake sits between New York and Vermont and stretches into Quebec. It also has shipwrecks, some of which are divable. I did not dive. I barely got my shoes wet.

Ausable Chasm, the Adirondacks' Grand Canyon, has drawn visitors for over a century. Cliff walks, cable bridges, roaring river, and plenty of chances to question your life choices while clinging to a railing. It is open year-round for a fee.

🏔️ Plattsburgh to Saranac Lake: Lake Placid and Whiteface Mountain

This 61.5-mile drive takes about 1 hour 20 minutes through the heart of the Adirondacks. Lake Placid is the winter sports capital of the world, and yes, it freezes, but the activities keep you warm. Whiteface Mountain is the fifth-highest mountain in New York and a popular ski destination with 288 skiable acres and over 90 trails. I do not ski, but I do fall with style.

Saranac Lake is barely 10 miles from Lake Placid and named after the Upper, Middle, and Lower Saranac Lakes nearby. It is scenic, activity-filled, and an excellent place to pretend you are outdoorsy.

🏰 Saranac Lake to Alexandria Bay: Thousand Islands and Boldt Castle

The 124-mile trip to Alexandria Bay moves from Adirondack hills to the St. Lawrence River. Alexandria Bay is a paradise in the Thousand Islands region. The Thousand Islands range from tiny to over 40 square miles, with waterfalls, lakes, and state parks. Boldt Castle on Heart Island is a major landmark, open seasonally from mid-May to mid-October. Is it a castle? Yes. Is it on an island? Yes. Do I now want a castle? Also yes.

🗼 Alexandria Bay to Oswego: Tibbetts Point Lighthouse and Lake Ontario

Instead of I-81, I took NY-12E via Cape Vincent to see Tibbetts Point Lighthouse, a circular tower built in 1854. There is a telescope to survey Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River where they meet. The 100-mile drive to Oswego via NY-12E and State Rte 3E runs along Lake Ontario and passes small lakeside villages like Sackets Harbor, home to the Sackets Harbor Battlefield State Historic Site. Rural beauty? Check. Windburn? Double check.

🍷 Oswego to Ithaca: Finger Lakes and Cornell

Oswego is a scenic port city with the H. Lee White Maritime Museum. Tours to the West Pierhead Lighthouse run mid-June to September at $30 per person. The 84-mile drive to Ithaca starts on NY-34S, touches Auburn and Owasco Lake, then follows Cayuga Lake's eastern shore on NY-90S. The Finger Lakes are home to excellent wine-making areas and scenic vacation destinations. Ithaca has Cornell University on Beebe Lake, Cornell Botanic Gardens, an arboretum, and multi-tiered Cascadilla Falls. I walked uphill both ways. Somehow.

🌊 Ithaca to Niagara Falls: Seneca Lake and the Big Waterfall

Heading west on NY-79W, I looped around Lake Seneca, the largest and deepest of the glacial Finger Lakes. Then I passed Rochester, named the most neighborly city in the country, and took the Lake Ontario State Parkway along 70-plus miles of picnic stops and overlooks. Finally, Niagara Falls. It is commonly listed as a candidate for the natural wonders of the world or an honorary eighth wonder. The 204-mile drive takes about 3 hours 50 minutes non-stop. Was it worth it? Ask my jaw, which was on the floor.

🥂 Niagara Falls to Corning: Buffalo, Keuka Lake, and Glass

The 143-mile drive to Corning includes Buffalo and the Buffalo and Erie County Naval and Military Park, which displays three naval vessels, tanks, and jets. Then Hammondsport, a pretty village at the south end of Keuka Lake. Vineyards and the wine industry emerged here in the 1850s, and Bully Hill Vineyards has incredible views of Keuka Lake. Corning is America's Crystal City and home to the Corning Museum of Glass, the world's largest glass art and artifacts museum. I did not buy a glass elephant. I bought two.

⚾ Corning to Cooperstown: Otsego Lake and Baseball

The 155-mile drive on the Southern Tier Expressway follows the New York-Pennsylvania border through green mountains and quaint towns. From Waverly to Binghamton, the Susquehanna River runs parallel. Cooperstown has rolling hills, nine-mile Otsego Lake, the Hall of Fame Museum, the Farmers' Museum, the Fenimore Art Museum, and more. Otsego Lake, also called Glimmerglass Lake, is the region's most popular outdoor attraction. Glimmerglass State Park overlooks it. The Cooperstown Beverage Trail is another must-do. I did the trail. Responsibly. Mostly.

👻 Cooperstown to Saugerties: Catskills and the Finale

The 91.5-mile drive to Saugerties cuts through the Catskills. The Catskills are a fantastic winter destination and a great year-round spot. They also have historic haunted spots and spooky tales. I did not see a ghost, but I did see a gift shop. Saugerties sits between the Catskill Mountains and the Hudson River. The Hudson Valley Garlic Festival is a local favorite. Saugerties Light, an 1867 lighthouse, a water preserve, waterfalls, and a 150-acre animal sanctuary are major attractions. What a way to end a 10-day road trip.
