Don't Skip These Unforgettable I-80 Stops on a Cross-Country Road Trip

Interstate 80 has a reputation for being a no-nonsense way to cross the country. I used to think of it as a flat, functional ribbon of asphalt running 2,901 miles from San Francisco, California, to Teaneck, New Jersey. But once I gave the route a little more time and patience, I discovered a road trip corridor packed with lively cities, lonely deserts, quirky landmarks, and peaceful state parks. Even in 2026, after plenty of coast-to-coast driving, I still think this interstate is wildly underrated. If you are planning your own adventure, these are the I-80 attractions I would not miss.

🌉 San Francisco: Start or Finish with a Bang

San Francisco is the westernmost point of I-80, and it is not a place I rush through. If I am starting there, I try to leave at least a couple of extra days. The Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz Island, Fisherman's Wharf, Pier 39, Union Square, and Golden Gate Park can easily fill a weekend. I also love walking through Chinatown and timing a spring visit for Tulipmania, one of the best tulip festivals in the country. September to November is my favorite window because the weather tends to be mild and the city feels especially walkable.

🏛️ Sacramento and Empire Mine: Gold Rush History

Further east, Sacramento is a worthwhile stop for travelers who enjoy historic charm with a modern edge. I always make time for Old Sacramento's preserved 19th-century structures, the California State Capitol Museum, and the Crocker Art Museum. If you need fresh air, Capitol Park and the American River Parkway are great places to stretch your legs. My preferred time to visit is April through June or September through November.

Not far from the interstate near Grass Valley, Empire Mine State Historic Park gives a fascinating look at California's gold-mining heritage. I enjoy touring the old mineyard, the Empire Cottage, and the Miners' Bunkhouse before hiking the park's trails. May through September is the best window for exploring comfortably.

🎰 Reno: The Biggest Little City

After the Sierra Nevada mountain driving, Reno feels like a welcome exhale. It has casino and nightlife options like its southern sibling, Las Vegas, but I actually prefer Reno for its outdoor access. Whitewater rafting, rockhounding, swimming, and unique museums such as the National Automobile Museum give the city plenty of personality. May to October is my go-to season.

🏔️ Salt Lake City and Bear River State Park

Salt Lake City is one of my favorite urban pauses on the route. Temple Square, the Utah State Capitol, Red Butte Garden, The Leonardo, and the Utah Museum of Contemporary Art all offer a nice mix of history, science, and art. If I have extra time, I head to Antelope Island to see bison, bighorn sheep, and antelope up close, or I drive to Park City for mountain energy. September to October is especially pleasant.

For wildlife without a huge detour, Bear River State Park near Evanston, Wyoming, is a free year-round gem. The visitor center has mounted specimens that tell the area's story, and the paved and gravel roads make it easy to look for bison and elk herds roaming the grounds. I like April, May, and October for mild weather and good animal viewing.

🚗 The Quirky Middle: Carhenge and Starved Rock

Carhenge is exactly as wonderfully strange as it sounds. Just off I-80 in Alliance, Nebraska, this sculpture garden is made of 39 old automobiles arranged to mimic Stonehenge. Jim Reinders and his family created it in 1987, and it has been drawing curious road trippers ever since. It is open 24 hours, so you can visit at almost any time. The detour from the interstate is roughly 20 minutes, and I think the weirdness is completely worth it.

Further along, Starved Rock State Park in Illinois offers a peaceful natural retreat along the Illinois River. Mossy canyons, seasonal waterfalls, and forested trails make it a great place to reset before continuing east. I like Lover's Leap Overlook, St. Louis Canyon, and French Canyon. April to November is the best season for hiking.

🍂 Pennsylvania's Peaceful Detour: McConnell's Mill

In western Pennsylvania, McConnell's Mill State Park is a quiet stunner. The covered bridge, rocky cliffs, and Slippery Rock Creek Gorge give it a postcard feel. I recommend hiking the Slippery Rock Gorge Trail to see waterfalls and lush vegetation, and if you like paddling or climbing, the area offers plenty of options. May through October is my preferred time to visit.

🏜️ Death Valley: A Dramatic Desert Detour

Death Valley is not exactly on the main interstate, but it is a detour I always consider when I have extra days. This national park is one of the hottest places on Earth, so I avoid summer and aim for late March through early April. Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes, Badwater Basin's salt flats, Titus Canyon, and the Telescope Peak area all feel like another planet. Before heading in, I make sure to fill the tank, pack snacks and water, and charge my devices because the desert can be unforgiving if you come unprepared.
